EARLY SPANISH  MISSIONARIES TO SOUTH AMERICA NAMED THE PASSION FLOWER.   THEY LIKENED THE BLOOMS TO THE PASSION OF JESUS CHRIST, USING THEIR IMAGINATION AND THEIR CURIOUS STRUCTURE TO REPRESENT DIFFERENT ELEMENTS OF THE BIBLICAL STORY:

○ THE 10 PETALS AND SEPALS SYMBOLISED THE 10 APOSTLES
– EXCLUDING JUDAS AND PETER, THEY WHO BETRAYED THE LORD.  BUT   THERE ARE A FEW VARIETIES WITH 12 PETALS AND SEPALS: PROOF THAT THE LORD FORGAVE HIS TWO SINNER DISCIPLES;

○ THE CORONA WITHIN THEM REPRESENTED THE CROWN OF
 THORNS;

 ○ THE FLOWER`S 5 ANTHERES STOOD FOR THE CHRIST`S
 WOUNDS;

 ○ THE 3 STIGMAS  - THE NAILS OF THE CROSS;

 ○ EVEN THE TENDRILS WERE SUPPOSEDLY REMINISCENT OF THE SCOURGES AND WHIPS OF CHRIST`S TORMENTORS.




 THE PASSION FLOWER HAS MORE THAN 400 VARIETIES. IN THIS EXHIBITION THERE ARE 4 VARIETIES:  PASSIFLORA QUADRANGULARIS, PASSIFLORA COCCINEA, PASSIFLORA CAERULEA AND PASSIFLORA FOETIDA.

 LET US OPEN OUR SOULS TO WELCOME THE PASSION FLOWER!
